Mass held for Norwood teen hurt in hockey game
NORWOOD, Mass. -- A Norwood high school hockey player was hospitalized Saturday night after breaking his neck during a game.
Matt Brown is currently in the intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital in Boston after a freak accident occurred at an ice rink in Hingham. Brown, who is a sophomore on the varsity hockey team, broke his neck after colliding with the boards.
“Players were going for a puck, and I think Matt just kind of lost his balance and basically went face first into the glass and boards,” said Norwood High School hockey coach Bill Clifford.
Coaches said that nothing was done wrong in the rink during the game and no one is to blame for this injury.
“I know there’s a group of students and the sophomore class that are going to get together and do a big card for Matt. As soon as Coach Clifford can bring that card in, he’s going to. We’re all waiting for the OK to go in and see him so that he knows that we’re supporting him,” said George Usevich, the principal at Norwood High School.
Counseling will be provided by the school for any students wishing to talk about the incident.
Meanwhile, a Mass of healing for Brown was held Tuesday morning at Saint Catherine’s Catholic Church across from Norwood City Hall.
Brown’s mother wished to thank the Hingham Fire Department for their timely response on Saturday.
